Blues Cup plate away v Rumney

A cold windy day for our Blues Cup plate game at Rumney in Cardiff saw the home team kick off. From the start it was obvious the game was going to be a bruising encounter, with both sets of fowards very committed in the tackle and in the rucks, Rumney piling on the early pressure, but both teams giving away penalties in the ruck area, the ref asserting himself in no uncertain terms. Having withstood the early pressure, our backs played a nice move with Finley Thomas passing out to Dexter Hart who in turn passed out to Ollie McNally who, once tackled, popped the ball back up to Dexter Hart to score, 5-0 to the Badgers. Rumney came straight back at us, great defence again by our lot initially, but ultimately some missed tackles gave the home side their equalising try, 5-5. Rumney then scored one more converted try before half time to make it 12-5 to them at the break. We came back fighting at the start of the second half and scored a great try by running around their big boys, the ball going wide to Dylan Arnold on the left wing who backed himself nicely into the corner, 12-10 and game on. The pressure from Rumney was intense, and our boys were coming off worst, battered and bruised but with every one of them putting their life on the line for the team, the sustained defence on our line at one point was so prolonged, Shaun Edwards himself would have been proud! However, Rumney eventually went over for the next try, the game ended 17-10. On reflection, a brutally hard fought match, which could and perhaps should have been reffed differently, but this is the type of game to expect in the Capital, and our boys will have to learn how to nullify it for the future.
