Someone’s O had to go!

Pontyclun RFC u8’s v Whitchurch RFC u8’s

The Badgers welcomed Whitchurch down to the Windsor fields on Sunday morning. The rain held off for the most part (before KO) but as soon as the whistle blew the rain started to fall. The pitch held up well and the conditions soon became worse, but it did not affect a fantastic game of rugby between 2 very good sides.

Whitchuch travelled down having been unbeaten during their tag lives much like the young badgers! So this was billed as a titanic battle and it did not disappoint.

Not used to playing smaller squads the badgers were put into 2 teams to take on the travelling army of 10 eager Whitchurch boys and their supporters.

Two 20 minute matches were played between the 2 sides with a further shortened match added onto the end.

Team 1

Morgan, Macsen, Ben, Reegan, Archie, Osian, Tate, Oliver, Harrison, Arthur

Team 1 for Pontyclun started the game and raced into a 3 try lead thanks to some brilliant runs from the M & Ms (Morgan & Macsen) but soon after it was plain to see how good the opposition Whitchurch boys were as they didn’t let the slow start faze them as they hit back with 2 tries of their own! A load of back and forth with some excellent rugby being played by both team each scoring some great individual and team tries. Ben dragged a would be tagger for 20 metres after they decided to clamp themselves onto his shirt and Harrison Edland scored a great try with some lovely jinking running. Reegan and Arthur were awesome patrolling the middle of the field starting many great attacks, Tate and Oliver were like men possessed tagging everything in sight, whilst Osian and wiggle hips Archie both set off on some great runs of their own. The running of Morgan and Macca who got on the outside of the defenders so many times proved to be the difference in the end as the badgers won the first half of games 8-6.

Morgan 4, Macsen 2, Harrison 1, Ben 1

Having watched intently the first game, the second load of badgers eagerly took to the field in the now howling wind and rain ready to match the performance of the boys that played so well before them. The Whitchurch danger men had been marked and the young badgers were ready to start the second stanza.

Team 2

Jake B, Jake A, Rhys B, Rhys H, Gethin, Joseph H, Seb, Nic, Harri Lewis, Jacob B

Whitchurch started the half with the ball and scored off the very first touch, to be fair to the boy he was very, very good all game and the heart of the Whitchurch side, the be-fuddled badgers though picked themselves up after the early blip when Gethin Rahilly charged down the sideline and dotted down in the corner, after that the boys put the Whitchurch side to the sword with some outstanding tagging sets and brilliant tries for the star of the game Nic Wilson, his support play was brilliant and his 3 tries were a by-product of that on top of some excellent long distance runs. The big men of Whitchuch couldn’t match up with the giants of the badgers as “big” Rhys Herridge and Joseph kept the opposition very quiet in the middle, whilst the abrasive Harri Lewis literally stopped a few attacks dead in their tracks, Jake Ayers produced a text book “tag tackle” to halt another on top of filling his boots with some more tags. Seb George had some powerful runs through the Whitchurch defence often dragging players with him and Jacob Bird aided him with some great had runs of his own, some awesome passing from the badgers and a wonderful offload from Rhys Blackshaw who has been immense all season, released Jake Barclay who outpaced the defenders and powered down the line to add to 2 early efforts.

The second game finished Pontyclun 7 Whitchurch 3

Nic 3, Jake B 3 Gethin 1

We requested a shortened 3rd game and to be fair to Whitchurch whose boys had been fantastic all game with shortened numbers, really dug in and agreed to it.

The 3rd game was much like the 2nd, against some excellent tiring opposition the boys started pulling away winning the game 6-2, some more power running from the M & Ms and MOM Nic was finished with a great solo effort from Joseph.

Pontyclun 6 Whitchuch 2

Macsen 2, Nic 2, Morgan 1, Joseph H 1

The big difference in the games was the extra effort the badgers had over Whitchurch when defending, some of the tagging from the boys is incredible, they hound players all day and if one of the boys misses there is another ready to take it himself! Its more uncommon to see some of the boys like the Jakes', Tate and the mad octopus Oliver without tags in their hands than with!! The organisation of the boys when defending is reall becoming impressive, lovely to see the hard work in training starting to come off.

That was a very, very good Whitchurch side who were unbeaten before Sunday and you could see why, but the talent level we have in this Badgers team is second to none!

Well done boys!

Final Score

Pontyclun 21 Whitchurch 11

MOM – Nic Wilson
