Brilliant Badgers. Pontyclun 9s

Sunday 10th Feb

Pencoed 9s v Pontyclun 9s

After missing the previous weeks game due to snow and ice, fingers were crossed for much of the weekend, with the rain coming down and the winds howling many thought the game would once again fall foul to the elements but much to the delight of the boys the game was declared on, fair play to the Pencoed staff for conducting an early pitch inspection and making sure the young guns had some running around to do!

The young badgers who travelled down to Pencoed, many who had been to Gibbos sleep over the night prior appeared dazed and half asleep during the warm up, that carried over into the start of the game where a good defensive turnover was followed by a drop ball off the first badgers carry!

Another excellent defensive effort gave the badgers the ball back and this time they made full use of it, some barnstorming runs from Jake Ayers and Harry Lewis made the hard yards, Oliver Mahoney shipped the ball out quickly followed by some excellent hands allowing the ball to move across the backline with Macsen Berridge flying into the corner. This was repeated with a big turnover from Ben Stevenson who did some excellent defending in the middle, an arcing run from Harrison Edland followed with Big Rhys Herridge running some great lines off the tackle! The ball again moved through the hands and a wonderful draw and give from Reegan Gibbo put Macca into the corner again! A tough first 10 finishing Pencoed 0 Pontyclun 10.

The boys really picked it up in the next 2 10 periods though with some outstanding defending only bettered by the tries scored! Macsen Bolt raced into the corner holding off blue and red defenders, again after more wonderful handling from Jake and Gibbo to set him free, a response from Pencoed with a well worked try was straight away answered when a rampaging Evan Lomas who had moments earlier sat a Pencoed attacker down with a huge hit, burst clear, the coaches all called for the ball to be moved wide to the backs in acres of space but the quick thinking of the fantastic Rhys Blackshaw who shunned the coaches calls and went blind with a quick pop to a missile running onto the ball in Morgan Protheroe who crashed over! Morgan again got on the scoresheet with an excellent line run and a top drawer carry over the whitewash! Some more dogged defending from the pint sized Mahoney and gadget arms Harry Lewis ensured the Pencoed players struggled to make much ground and the scoring this quarter was finished when Jake Barclay from half way scythed through the defence, got caught, but a wonderful step and go ensured another badgers try when he dived into the corner.

The 3rd started much the same with some fine leg chops from Jake Ayers and Ben Stevenson and soon after the lightning bolt Mac attack side stepping multiple defenders went over for his 4th try of the day! Tate Morris and Sam Morgan Richards worked all game, defending the wide channels and not allowing the great offloading game of the opposition to get around them. The defensive pressure the badgers bought caused all sorts of problems as Pencoed began to tire, an errant pass from the tackle fell into Barclays arms and he raced through just about holding off the despairing tackle to fall over the line. An unfair ruling denied Harry Lewis a well deserved try, being called short when he was over the line. The performance was only bettered by the desire, Blackshaw made an outstanding cover tackle when Pencoed looked destined to score in the corner then on the last tackle the boys flew off the line and took the despairing Pencoed ball carrier into touch when he looked certain to score! The patented dummy and go from Jake added a further score from distance whilst the 9s saved the best try for last! Gibbo and Ayers provided the big hit close to their own line to dislodge the ball, the ball bounced out of the tackle to Edland who offloaded to Jake Barclay, A moari sidestep over a defender opened up play, followed by a dummy, he raced into open field abtly supported by Sam and Morgan, a lovely draw and give set Protheroe steaming away, defenders chased but couldn’t catch the run away train as he raced away, a score applauded loudly by both sets of supporters.

The badgers were promised a 4th quarter but the performance in the 3rd stanza took the wind out of the excellent Pencoed team and the 3rd was the last they played. The score probably flattered the Badgers, Pencoed are an excellent team and the boys had to work their socks off for every try they scored. The best teams always bring the best out of the boys. They produced some fantastic rugby, some of the tries scored were top, top drawer, they should be very proud of themselves as they continue making huge strides as rugby players. Well done

Final Score

Pencoed 10 Pontyclun 50

Macsen Berridge 4, Jake Barclay 3, Morgan Protheroe 3
