Under 9s RR with Ynysowen & Bargoed

Sunday November 4th

The under 9s travelled down to the Merthyr valley to play a round robin against Ynysowen and Bargoed. Still missing a few boys due to half term commitments the Badgers just about managed to put together 2 teams.

The games were played alongside each other with the Badger coaches lucky enough to not have to ref and be able to coach the boys during the games from behind the lads and from the sideline.

Against Ynysowen the ref let boths side play with tit for tats decisions going both ways, The boys are really starting to gel and some excellent tries were scored which were only bettered by some of the try saving tackles with the boys chasing back seemingly lost causes only to make the tackle right at the death. Big Rhys Herridge raced in another half field effort to dot down in the corner, whilst Archie wreaked havoc with his running up the guts to score 3, Tate Morris added another hat-trick with some silky running. Jacob Bird (onside this time) captured a stray pass from Ynyowen to run in from half way whilst some great direct running from Ben Stevenson added a further 2 tries. Normally used for his tackling technique, the aptly named Torpedo Jones (Alfie) raced in for 2 and the scoring was finished off by Jake Ayers with a lovely second half double. Charley Nash and Harry Howell patrolled the middle of the field well, making some excellent tackles, Harrison Edland pulling double duty on the day, made some lovely winding runs, Whilst some fantastic midfield runs by Seb George provided the badgers great field position, some excellent runs and offloading from Joseph Hawksworth assisted many of the above tries.

Final Score

Ynysowen 30 Pontyclun 70

Tate Morris 3, Archie Hancock 3, Ben Stevenson 2, Alfie Jones 2, Jake Ayers 2, Rhys Herridge 1, Jacob Bird 1.

Against a very good Bargoed side who have been undefeated during the early days of tackling, The badgers knew they had a tough task on their hands! It didn’t take long to find out what the well drilled Bargoed side were all about, Some massive kids up the middle but also the slick hands to get the ball moving. The young Badgers however were more than a match for their Rhymney valley counter parts, and an edge in the physicality stakes on both sides of the ball from Pontyclun and better handling skills provided the main difference between the sides! The scoreline flattered the Badgers in the end with some try savers when the scores were closer making the scoring gap look wider than the game seemed to be. This was another example of the boys rising to tough challenges with some more fantastic rugby on offer from the Badgers, some immense defending when they barely had the ball in the second half and some exquisite trys were too much for the Bargoed side on the day. Harry Lewis, and Jake Barclay were immense defending the middle, Harry Lewis and his go-go gadget arms dragging down defenders with Reegan Gibbons schything down anyone managing to break through, Morgan Protheroe continued his steller play when he powered over for a robust double, whilst Evan Lomas showed off his power running, shedding tacklers all day and added a further 2 tries. Macsen Berridge showcased his breakaway speed and offered a peak at his power running ability adding 5 tries onto the Badgers total and the scoring was finished off with 5 tries from Jake Barclay with the patented dumm and go on full display! A pat on the back from Oliver Mahoney who shook off 3 huge hits whilst attempting to pass the ball from SH, only to get up and make some huge carries right back into the meat of the Bargoed defenders!

Final Score

Bargoed 15 Pontyclun 70

Jake Barclay 5, Macsen Berridge 5, Morgan Protheroe 2, Evan Lomas 2

Another awesome showing from the 9s today well done lads
